Partnering to Support Women Through Breast Cancer Treatment — With Evidence, Compassion, and Community

At My Girls Skin Care, we believe that comprehensive cancer care should support both the physical and emotional well-being of women navigating breast cancer treatment. We are dedicated to collaborating with cancer centers, radiation oncology departments, and multidisciplinary care teams worldwide to provide evidence-informed resources that help patients manage treatment side effects, maintain comfort, and stay connected to life and hope.

Skin Care Support Backed by Research

One of the most common side effects of radiation therapy — particularly in breast cancer treatment — is radiation-induced dermatitis, a condition that can range from redness and itching to painful skin breakdown. Up to 95% of patients undergoing radiotherapy experience some degree of skin reaction, which can negatively affect quality of life and, in some cases, interrupt treatment schedules.

Among complementary options studied, Calendula officinalis, a plant extract derived from the marigold flower, has been evaluated in clinical research. In a large Phase III randomized study of women receiving postoperative radiotherapy for breast cancer, those who applied calendula ointment to the treated skin had significantly fewer severe skin reactions (grade 2 or higher) compared with those using a reference topical agent (41% vs 63%). Calendula users also reported less radiation-related pain and fewer radiotherapy interruptions, and overall satisfaction was higher.

Some trials have shown mixed results depending on the comparator or formulation, and further research is ongoing. A 2026 clinical trial protocol has been published to continue evaluating calendula’s role alongside chamomile in managing radiodermatitis across different cancer types.

These findings indicate that while standard dermatologic care remains essential, certain plant-based topical agents like calendula may provide an additional supportive option to accompany clinical recommendations — particularly when chosen deliberately and under clinical guidance.

The Power of Community Support

Medical treatment is only one piece of the healing journey. Research consistently shows that social and emotional support plays a critical role in patients’ quality of life and overall well-being during and after cancer treatment.

Support groups — whether in person, virtual, or part of a broader psychosocial program — offer patients an opportunity to share experiences, reduce feelings of isolation, and build resilience alongside peers facing similar challenges. Studies find that participating in breast cancer support groups can reduce anxiety and depression, improve coping strategies, and increase feelings of connection and hope.

More comprehensive research suggests that higher levels of social support are also associated with improved health outcomes for women with breast cancer, including potentially lower overall mortality in some prospective studies, emphasizing the importance of social networks as part of survivorship care.

Furthermore, peer support and community-based programs have been shown to enhance psychosocial well-being, reduce perceived isolation, validate patient experiences, and provide stress relief — all of which contribute to a more holistic healing environment.

A Shared Commitment to Patient-Centered Care

We recognize that cancer centers and oncology departments are the backbone of evidence-based clinical care. My Girls Skin Care’s role is to complement that care with resources that address the patient experience — from managing skin side effects to fostering emotional strength.

We are eager to collaborate in ways that may include:

  • Sharing educational materials for patients undergoing radiation or systemic therapies

  • Providing science-informed guidance on skincare routines that support comfort and dignity

  • Supporting survivorship and wellness programs that incorporate emotional and community-based resources

  • Partnering on research dissemination and patient education initiatives

Let’s Enhance Support Together
