Wellesley Residents Run for Charity

Posted by Wellesley Media Group on Apr 21st 2016

Interviewer: Today, we caught up with a group of Wellesley residents training for the 120th Boston Marathon. We asked them a few questions and found out they're not only running for the finish line but also to raise money and awareness for great causes.

Theresa: And this year, Boston Marathon is my first marathon and I will run for Susan G. Komen of Southern New England and in support of their partnership with Cancer Care, which is a national program for medically under-served women. And so, what that means is that there's lots of women out there that are fighting breast cancer and they don't have adequate health coverage. So you add in a 3D mammogram, a thousand dollar MRI, it gets pretty expensive, not to mention all of the high premiums, the cost of chemotherapy, wigs; it just gets really expensive. So, I'm running in support of those women out there that are fighting breast cancer and don't have adequate health coverage.

Stephanie: I'm Stephanie Hawkinson. I'm from Wellesley and I'm running for the Ellie Fund, which provides support services for women undergoing breast cancer treatments.

Kristin: And I'm Kristin Donahue, also from Wellesley, and I'm running for the Glen Doherty Memorial Foundation and we provide scholarships for special ops soldiers so that they can have a career change in life.

Amy: I'm Amy Leibowitz. I live in Wellesley and I'm running for Children's Hospital in honor of my niece, Avery.

Kate: I'm Kate Maul. I live in Wellesley and I'm running the marathon for my patient partner, Will Ward, for Children's Hospital and in particular, Beggs Lab at Children's Hospital.

Gretchen: Hi, I'm Gretchen Wilson. I'm from Needham and I am running for Children's Hospital in honor of Will Ward as well for Beggs Laboratory.

Carol: Hi, My name is Carol Chaoui. I live in Wellesley and I'm running the Boston Marathon this year to raise money for metastatic breast cancer research at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.

Interviewer: These Wellesley residents will be running the Boston Marathon on April 18th. If you would like to learn more about the charities they're running for, please visit their websites. Good luck to all of the runners in this year's Boston Marathon.
